IFP has called for the immediate arrest of municipal officials who have been
implicated by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in corrupt activities
involving millions of rands in a number of North West Municipalities.
In respect of the Madibeng Municipality, IFP spokesperson on Cooperative
Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith said: "It is alarming to
discover the amount of self-enrichment and tender fraud that has taken place
in this municipality. It is distressing to learn that 12 companies that are
doing business with the Madibeng municipality are actually owned by
municipal officials, who have been lining their own pockets at the expense
of the taxpayer".
Smith further stated: "There is no room for people who use the municipality
as their personal cash-cow. Municipal officials must declare their business
interests so that there is no conflict in the awarding of tenders. Service
delivery must be the focus of any municipality, not self-serving corrupt
activities".
The IFP calls on the SIU to investigate all corruption claims in
municipalities around the country so that the law of the country may be
enforced against those involved. Municipalities cannot be led by corrupt
people.
