The residents of OR Tambo Municipality in the Eastern Cape are suffering
from a lack of water and sanitation due to the poor performance of those
in-charge of running the municipality.
"The Municipality has lost R50 million for water and sanitation allocated by
the Department of Water Affairs because the municipality had no expenditure
plan. The residents are desperately in need of water and proper sanitation,
the money had been allocated, yet the OR Tambo Municipality simply did
nothing" said Mr Peter Smith, IFP Spokesperson for Co-operative Governance
and Traditional Affairs in Parliament.
Smith further added that " The issue of lack of service delivery in many
Eastern Cape Municipalities needs to be dealt with without delay. Far too
many of these municipalities are failing through corruption, lack of skills
and cadre deployment. The residents are always the ones who suffer from
these failures."
The OR Tambo Municipality, the MEC for Co-operative Governance and
Traditional Affairs in the Eastern Cape Mlibo Qoboshiyane, and the MEC for
Human Settlements must intervene to solve these issues.
