The IFP urges the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional
Affairs in Kwa-Zulu Natal to take further steps against NFP and uMhlathuze
municipal councillor, Mr. Njabulo Mlaba, who has not attended over 35
council meetings since his election in May last year and to investigate why
the Speaker of the municipality has failed to take disciplinary steps
against the councilor, as required by law.
IFP Spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr.
Peter Smith MP said, "Clearly Mr. Mlaba does not respect his duties as
councillor if he can be absent from so many meetings. He should be removed
as councillor of uMhlathuze municipality. The municipality cannot have a
representative who fails to attend so many meetings but still gets his full
pay. Every meeting is important and councillors cannot miss 3 consecutive
meetings, but because of his disregard for his duties he continued to do
so."
The IFP believes that the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional
Affairs should ascertain whether the NFP has been protecting the councilor
and if so, whether disciplinary measures should not also be taken against
the Speaker.
The IFP calls for the removal of Mr. Mlaba and replacement with a councillor
dedicated to the job and able to speed up service delivery to the people of
uMhlathuze.
