The IFP has called for legal action to be taken against the City of
Johannesburg for failing to enclose the open storm water drains in Ivory
Park, which led to the death of a 10 year old girl on Tuesday.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr
Peter Smith said "The family of Millicent Mampa must seek legal action
against the City, because the residents have been complaining about these
drains for years and even told councillors about them. Despite promises to
fix them, nothing was done, which gives the impression that the City does
not care about its people"

The drains are situated next to the local schools and are easily accessible
to the school pupils.

"It is shocking to learn that these drains are only earmarked to be fixed in
the 2013/2014 financial year, instead of doing something about it now as it
is an urgent matter. People's lives are at risk and as the death of the
young girl has shown, the City cannot rely on awareness programmes to stop
children from playing near dangerous areas. Why it has taken this long to
act on this issue that the community itself reported to the city is
baffling" said Smith.

The IFP calls on the City of Johannesburg and Ward Councillors to make sure
that they adhere to the promises they made to the community. In addition the
City of Johannesburg must be prepared to cover the cost for the funeral of
this young girl who died due to its inaction.

The IFP would also like to pass its sincere condolences to the family of
Millicent Mampa and also to the pupils and teachers of Bonwelong Primary
School.
