The IFP calls on the Kwazulu-Natal Provincial Government to urgently conduct
an investigation into claims that athletes participating in the Nelson
Mandela Day Marathon over the weekend were forced to sleep on concrete
floors, without toilets and food the night before the race.

"This must be investigated as we are of the view that the company which was
awarded the tender to provide tents and mattresses for runners, as is
normally done at the Comrades Marathon, has failed to provide this service.
This debacle goes against the aim of honouring Madiba's legacy through sport
and also to make people more aware of his life and his contribution to South
Africa's democratic freedom. This is total disgrace to former President, Dr
Nelson Mandela and also reflects badly on our country considering that there
were participants from other countries," said IFP Spokesperson on Sports and
Recreation, Mr Nhlanhla Msimango,MPL.

"We cannot allow a situation where our athletes are treated inhumanely.
Action must be taken to ensure that this does not reoccur. An investigation
and action must be taken against those responsible for this debacle starting
with the uMgungundlovu District Municipality who hosted this event,"
continued Mr Msimango.

"Government must also work hard in a co-ordinated effort to ensure that the
next marathon is well organised and participants must be guaranteed that
plans are in place to ensure a successful marathon. Our runners must be
treated with dignity, failure to do so will discourage many athletes from
participating in future events," concluded Mr Msimangp.
