The IFP has raised its concern about Government Departments who owe millions
of rands to the Office of the Auditor General.
"The Departments must give full details on the causes of their failure to
pay these outstanding fees to the Auditor General in time. Is this due to
poor financial management or are their officials too lazy to adhere to their
job description?" asked Mr Narend Singh, IFP Spokesperson for Finance in
Parliament.
Singh further added that, "If the National Departments owe R63 million, how
can the Auditor General perform his duties? The Director Generals and the
Heads of Departments of all the Departments involved must be held
accountable for this. It is their responsibility to investigate and follow
up on these matters. In addition, state-owned entities also owe the Auditor
General millions of rands," said Singh.
The IFP calls on the Ministers responsible for Finance, Public Enterprises
and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs to intervene immediately
and investigate the reasons for this failure to settle the Auditor-General's
accounts." Non-payment of these fees is having a major negative impact in
the office of the Auditor General which is doing a sterling job of holding
non-performing Departments accountable."
