The Judge Nicholson Report took centre stage at today's meeting between
Cricket SA and Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Sports and Recreation.
Cricket SA's delegation, led by Acting CEO Jacques Faul, referred to the
Board Steering Committee that has been tasked with implementing
recommendations contained in the Report. The Committee will table a progress
report during an Indaba this month.
IFP Spokesperson on Sports and Recreation, Mr Mkhuleko Hlengwa MP, emerged
from the meeting feeling optimistic. "It is obvious that Cricket SA is in a
state of disarray, but equally obvious that they are working hard to turn
things around. Faul and his team were bold enough to admit to the Board's
failures. They have restored our hope that Cricket SA is on course to
normalisation."
When the Nicholson Report first appeared, the IFP expressed concern that
scandals in Cricket SA could begin to hamper player performance. The
match-fixing scandal heightened these concerns. Now, as Jacques Faul leads
his team through turbulent times, the IFP has offered support, and a word of
caution.
"Whatever is not right must be corrected, and whatever is right must be
built on for the sake of a sport we all love," said Hlengwa. "The IFP
believes the survival of Cricket SA will be determined at the Indaba. We
call on all South African cricket unions to work together to restore the
credibility, dignity and image of the sport's administration."
The IFP, and all cricket fans, will be watching closely.
