In response to the Manase report's findings, the IFP Ethekwini caucus has called for the municipality to be placed under administration.
Responding today to the Manase report's findings, the IFP's Ethekwini caucus Chairperson, Mr Mdu Nkosi said, "We are not surprised by the findings of the Manase report as we have become familiar with the ANC's culture of condoning corruption. We are relieved that the Manase report is highlighting corruption and maladministration in our municipality and we are distressed that it is only now being addressed when the ANC has its own internal scores to settle. For too long, we the citizens and ratepayers of Ethekwini Municipality had to bear the personal and financial burden of the ANC controlled municipality's abuses and excesses."
Nkosi continued, "We are calling for the officials and councillors who are named in the Manase report to be suspended forthwith and necessary disciplinary actions and procedures to be followed. It is imperative that the municipality also recovers financial losses that have been incurred. Furthermore, we call for a detailed forensic investigation into the Metro Police and Housing Departments, as the Manase report has not investigated these in depth.
"Although we have a new Municipal Manager, the fact that senior officials are implicated and need to be suspended, will leave the municipality in disarray. The IFP Ethekwini caucus therefore calls for the Ethekwini Municipality to be placed under administration. Due to financial losses incurred and as the removal of officials will place the municipality in a position of not being able to render basic services, we request that the Province invokes section 139 of the Constitution.
"The municipality must also not be held responsible for legal expenses to be paid for the officials who have been implicated in this scandal as ratepayers should not be burdened with this financial expenses," Nkosi concluded.
