A plea to fix P102 intersecting Mandleleni Road, from Inkatha Freedom
Party Councillors in Ndwedwe Municipality, KwaZulu Natal has gone
unheard as this road continues to endanger the lives of all road users
in the area.
“We are gravely concerned by the department of Transport’s continuous
delay to ‘fix up’ this sinkhole, which has grown tremendously,
especially since there has been plenty of rain in the past weeks. Our
Cllrs have submitted numerous complaints to the department about this
road but they have fallen on deaf ears,” said Honourable Lindani
Mncwango, Shadow MEC for Transport.
P102 is the main road from Mantobelo Hospital, passing Sigedleni
Primary School, Ndwedwe Community Health Care Centre, Social Development
road to Ndwedwe Municipal offices and Ndwedwe Police Station. This road
is also a leading route to eThekwini Municipality, Tongaat and various
other public offices and Elangeni FET College. It has also been reported
that there are no street lights where this sinkhole is making it
difficult to spot it when it’s dark.
“The department of Transport needs not only do something about this
road but it must try and put up warning signs for road users. If, as a
Province we are serious about fighting the high rate of road accidents,
we need to start tackling such problems,” said Honourable Mncwango.
The IFP has spotted various other roads in Ndwedwe Municipality that
pose as danger zones in the area. To note D868 from Simamane, passing
P102, joining P100 leading to Ndwedwe CHC has been closed down due to
its unbearable conditions for both pedestrians and other road users.
P713 off P100 from Nombika High School, passing Gasela and Intaphuka
Primary School leading to Osindisweni Hospital has a bridge that is
falling apart amongst the many problems this road has.
“I will use every appropriate parliamentary mechanism available to push
the Provincial Department of transport to fulfil its road safety man
date by making sure that roads are properly constructed and safe for
all road users. Broken promises do not save the lives of road users,”
said Honourable Mncwango.
