The IFP has called upon the Special Investigations Unit to probe deeply into
allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the Department of Human
Settlements in relation to some R4bn worth of low cost housing projects,
some of which have been in operation since 1996.
"The Special Investigations Unit has performed well in exposing corruption
in the Department of Human Settlements, especially in housing projects.
However, the government's promise of providing people with better housing
and eradicating shacks by 2014 will never be fulfilled unless far more is
done to probe, expose and curb corruption in such projects," said Mr Petros
Sithole, IFP Spokesperson on Human Settlements.
Sithole added ,"Corruption in the Department of Human Settlements is endemic
and dates back to 1994. It is important that the SIUs reports disclose all
details of those implicated in corruption, from the contractors to the
Minister's office, as well as those who have been criminally charged thus
far."
"Our people have second rate houses which are constantly in need of
rectification and re-rectification. Contractors are paid millions, yet
provide sub-standard workmanship and receive no sanction for same, the sole
reason being that they are protected by corrupt elements from within the
Department. The rot in this Department must be rooted out! It must be dealt
with once and for all. This is essential if the Department wishes to deliver
on its mandate to the people of South Africa".
