The Mpumalanga Department of Health must be held accountable for their
attempts at reneging on their salary promises made to their staff during
recruitment.
The salaries advertised for the nurses' posts did not match up with the
amounts paid to them at the end of the month. The department claims that
there was a misprint in the job advert on the part of salaries to be paid to
staff.
"It is not the nurses' fault that there was a misprint with the advert. The
Department should have informed the nurses' prior to their interviews about
the misprint or re-advertised the posts with the correct salary amounts and
not inform nurses about it in their appointment letters," said IFP
Spokesperson on Health Hon. Hilda Msweli MP.
"The Department should not take advantage of people simply because there is
a scarcity of jobs in the country and people are susceptible to
manipulation" said Msweli.
The IFP believes that the Department should pay the nurses the salary that
they are eligible for as nurses. They must also explain this fully to the
nurses and reach a mutual agreement before any threatened strike action can
be embarked upon.
"The country cannot keep on having unnecessary strikes" added Msweli.
The IFP urges the Department of Health to always be vigilant of what they
send out in their job adverts and stop giving false hope to people t hrough
advertising like this.
