The IFP is rather puzzled to find that there is a hair and beauty salon
operating inside the premises of Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.
It has been operating for more than 10 years and no one from the Department
of Health sees anything unusual or wrong about this.
IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs. Hilda Msweli MP, said "A hospital shouldn't
be a multi-purpose centre. It is a hospital for treating patients and not
for hair and beauty treatments. When there is a salon operating inside the
premises of the hospital isn't that going to affect the patients' recovery?"
asked Msweli.
Msweli added, "The smell of chemicals used in the salon and hair that is
flying around the hospital can cause patients to acquire more illnesses. The
inhalation of chemicals from hair product may disrupt the effectiveness of
the medication they are given at the hospital, slowing down the process of
recovery or nullifying it completely.
"This salon should be closed! The salon owners should find other premises to
operate in and not at the hospital," said Msweli.
The IFP urges the Department of Health to order the management of Charlotte
Maxeke Hospital to explain how and why this salon has been allowed to
operate inside the hospital's premises for the past 10 years. The management
should be held accountable for putting patients' health at risk.
