The IFP laments the loss of lives and injuries which have taken place at
Lonmin Marikana mine. Our sympathies go to the loved ones, families,
relatives and friends of those who have lost their lives.
IFP Spokesperson on Mineral Resources, Hon Eric Lucas MP said, "In this day
and age problems should be solved in a more civilized manner. We hope that
the Unions which are involved can come to an agreement in order for
negotiations to proceed."
"We believe that more constraints must be used in order to stop this ongoing
behaviour. NUM and Amcu, as the mineworkers' unions, should protect their
members, listen and take note of their grievances. Workers shouldn't resolve
to violence in order to be heard," said Lucas.
The IFP calls for investigations to identify those who started the shooting
between police and mineworkers, and insists they be made to account.
We also hope for a mutual agreement between the workers and their employer.
This confrontation must come to an end
