IFP fails to prove that its members are removed from the roll - IEC

The IFP had failed to prove that the IEC deliberately removed its members from the voters roll, KwaZulu-Natal chief electoral officer, Mawethu Mosery said on Monday.

"We wrote a letter to the party requesting that it furnish us with evidence to prove the claim they made and we have not received anything from the party," said Mosery.

During the last voter registration drive in February, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) national chairwoman, Zanele Magwaza-Msibi told Sapa that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was removing IFP members from the voters' roll mainly in the party's strongholds.

The claim was quickly condemned by IEC chairwoman Brigalia Bam.

"We wrote them a letter immediately after the claim was made and we made it clear that we needed the response within a reasonable time because we needed to deal with the matter urgently," said Mosery.

He said the electoral commission was beginning to doubt whether to pursue the matter or not.

"We do not know whether to continue with this or not because it has been almost 30 days after we requested evidence."

Commenting on the IEC's request, Msibi on Monday said she did not know whether she would still find the list of people who were removed from the roll.

"The only thing I remember is that they were mainly from the Melmoth area. I will try and find the list."

She said she was not aware that the IEC had requested proof from her party, adding that she would find out from other party leaders.

Magwaza had last month said she received numerous calls from the party members who complained that their names did not appear on the voter's role despite having voted since 1994.

She said at the time that she believed that there were "shenanigans" at the IEC and that her party thought that there were African National Congress elements at the IEC.
