Correctional services spokesperson Victor Monyemangene told BuaNews that only trial awaiting prisoners and those serving sentences with an option of a fine could vote.
He said the registration started yesterday and would continue until tomorrow, covering all prisoners around the country.
"Provision would also be made for prisoners who will be going to courts or are being transferred to other prisons and hospitals on the dates of registration, to either register before they leave or upon their return to prison," he said.
Monyemangene said electoral officers would also be present to assist with the registration of prisoners received into prisons after normal office hours. The IEC has earmarked the January 24/25 weekend for the second round of its massive voter registration drive to get more potential voters onto the voters' roll.
The IEC has prepared 17 000 voting stations throughout the country.
The last voter registration was on 8-9 November last year, where more than 3,5-million people registered, re-registered or confirmed their details on the voters' roll. During the forthcoming registration weekend, the IEC hopes to capture an additional 2- million new registrations. – BuaNews.
