Xanthea Limberg, the President of the Young Independent Democrats (YID) has accused the ANC Youth League of being ‘like an irresponsible and undisciplined little brat that sees violence as the answer to everything.'
The ID Youth Leader's comments come after the Free State ANC Youth League Chair, Thebe Meeko, apparently said yesterday that the vice-chancellor of Free State University, Jonathan Jansen, should be "shot and killed because he is a racist."
Limberg says ‘while the YID understands that some of the leaders in the ANCYL are struggling to understand the complex race issues we are debating, we would like to call on them to refrain from trying to ruin the good arguments the rest of us have come up with for why Professor Jansen's decision was a mistake,' Ms Limberg says.
‘The buffoons in the ANCYL seem to be acting on the kind of idiocy that assures one that if the word "kill" is inserted in even the most idiotic drivel, more people will sit up and take notice.'
The YID President says she ‘stands by the YID's assertion that one-sided acts of reconciliation almost always have the effect of entrenching the oppressor's belief that he is superior and the YID believes Jansen's decision represents one such act.
‘While we appreciate the Mandela-esque nature of Jansen's gesture, this is not 1994 and anyone that continues to display a baas-mentality in this day and age must be punished ruthlessly using every channel open to us,' Limberg says.
‘This is a higher education institution pushing out a warped message that students will not be held responsible for their actions.
‘The time has now arrived for Jansen to admit that in this instance he has misinterpreted the process of reconciliation. Why is it that black South Africans are always under more pressure to forgive than whites are to show remorse and ask for that forgiveness?
‘Jansen is also saying in his speech that you cannot hold the four students responsible because he believes the institution is actually responsible. In fact, this is the thinking that has informed our approach to reconciliation in our country up until now and we believe it is time to rethink this approach,' says Limberg.
‘Now that Apartheid's institutionalised racism is no longer here, we must be honest and say that racists do no longer have the institutional excuse.
‘For 16 years we have been soft on racism, bending over backwards to try to understand racists as being equal victims of Apartheid and this has been a mistake,' Limberg says.
