ID President Patricia de Lille has welcomed the appointment of new national police commissioner Bheki Cele, ‘because we have paid for a commissioner to be on long leave, instead of at work, for 2 years and this will therefore save taxpayers a lot of money.
‘We call on the new commissioner not to allow any political interference in his work, otherwise he will eventually go the same route as Jackie Selebi,' Ms De Lille says.
‘We also call on him to meet with the provincial commissioners as a matter of urgency to come up with a co-coordinated strategy against crime, because crime remains out of control.
‘South Africa needs a commissioner that can take us into his confidence, be open and honest about his plans and ensure that every community and every single person becomes involved in the fight against crime,' says De Lille.
