Joe Mcgluwa, the ID Spokesperson for Sport, has congratulated the South African athletics team for their ‘mammoth achievements at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
‘We in the Independent Democrats would like to convey very special congratulations to Caster Semenya and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, both of whom are bringing home gold medals for the 800m,' Mr Mcgluwa says.
‘While both victories were the culmination of a huge amount of hard work, Caster's race was not just a race against other world-class athletes, but also against the additional menaces of discrimination and sexism. In spite of these tremendous challenges, she ran her race and won.
‘Her victory does therefore not only represent a victory for our nation, but also a collective victory for the women of our country and continent, who have suffered the added oppression that has come with being women,' says Mcgluwa.
‘This is particularly apt considering that it is Women's Month. The IAAF can take any trophies and money away from Caster, but her dignity and tenacity will remain with us forever.'
The ID Member of Parliament reiterated the call by ID President Patricia de Lille that Semenya sue the IAAF for their insensitivity in handling her gender test.
‘Semenya and her family have been subjected to terrible humiliation and the IAAF's admission that it "could have done better" is certainly grounds for Semenya to take legal action,' Mcgluwa says.
