The Independent Democrats (ID) Spokesperson on Public Enterprises, Lance Greyling, has demanded greater clarity from Eskom concerning the real reasons behind the latest threat of rolling blackouts.

‘Last year Eskom announced that it had a reserve margin of 11.6 percent which should be enough to ensure adequate power to the grid even with the need for planned maintenance of their plants,’ states Mr Greyling.

‘Eskom therefore needs to explain why the threat of blackouts is once again with us and whether any of this is due to poor management of their power plants. Eskom also needs to clarify what has led to the need for unplanned maintenance at some plants and whether this is due to incompetence such as the catastrophe that occurred at the Duvha power station last year.

‘The ID also finds it unacceptable that Parliament has still not received the final report of that disaster in which a sorely needed 600 Megawatts was removed from the grid at a cost of billions of Rand to the country due to simple gross incompetence,’ says Greyling.

The ID finds it deplorable that Eskom executives can take huge bonuses last year under the guise of keeping the lights on only to present the country with a new threat of blackouts in 2012.

‘The ID would therefore also like to see an external audit of the performance of all our power stations take place so that we can obtain an independent view of the problems in Eskom that are continuing to hold our economy to ransom,’ Greyling says.
