ID President Patricia de Lille says today's disruption of a meeting attended by DA leader Helen Zille, north of Pretoria, was ‘unconstitutional.'
A rowdy crowd in Winterveld apparently disrupted the meeting shortly before Zille was due to speak.
Ms De Lille has cited Section 18 of the Constitution in the Bill of Rights, which says,
"Everyone has the right to freedom of association."
Further on, under the heading ‘political right', Section 19 (1) (b and c), read,
"1. Every citizen is free to make political choices, which include the right, [b] to participate in the activities of, or recruit members for, a political party [c} and to campaign for a political party or cause."
‘We must appeal to all political parties to respect the Constitutional right of any person in South Africa to belong to a political party of their choice,' says De Lille.
‘The Independent Democrats condemns the political intolerance of whoever was responsible for disrupting the meeting of DA leader Helen Zille.'
