The Independent Democrats Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Mr Rodney Lentit says the 30,623 textiles, clothing and leather goods industry job losses in the province from 1995 up until 2011 is a great cause for concern.
This follows a written question reply from the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Mr Alan Winde.
‘More than 50% of workers in the Textiles, Clothing and Leather Goods industry lost their jobs in the 16 year period as stipulated above.
‘In the same period the Wholesale and Retail industry suffered a fluctuated from 211,551 to 318,315 jobs in the same period. Though this amount is lower than anticipated, I am optimistic about the Minister’s strategies to grow this industry,’ Lentit says.
