ID President Patricia de Lille says that ‘if the allegations that individuals used the R100 million AgriBEE fund on themselves rather than on farmers in need are true, then every last one of these individuals must be prosecuted and jailed.'
The Sunday Times reported today that the money in the fund was earmarked for a number of projects, including a support group's growing of food for orphans and HIV/Aids sufferers.
‘The single largest failure of the Government's land restitution programme has been that they have been giving land to people that have then been left to their own devices,' Ms De Lille says.
‘If true, these latest allegations show that some of those right at the top of the institutions tasked with supporting emerging farmers would rather rob our people blind than make the kind of difference our country needs.
‘It makes me sick to my stomach to think that people are actually getting away with this kind of criminal behaviour and I would like to call on Tina Joemat Pettersson, the Minister of Agriculture, to bring that forensic report to Parliament,' says De Lille.
