Joe Mcgluwa, the ID Spokesperson for Sport, has welcomed Bafana Bafana Coach Carlos Parreira and SA soccer body Safa's ‘proactive campaign to bring some of our star players home for the training camp.'
Mr Mcgluwa's comments come 3 weeks after he accused Safa of "just sitting on their backsides and hoping that overseas clubs will release Bafana Bafana's players for the camp."
His 15 January statement was issued after media reports that Elrio van Heerden has been prevented from attending Bafana Bafana's training camp in Durban by his coach, Muhshin Ertugral.
‘It is only fair that the ID commends Safa and Perreira for taking notice of our call and visiting club coaches overseas in an attempt to bring our players home for training camp,' says Mcgluwa.
‘This is exactly the kind of spirit we want to see from Safa and our coach when it comes to issues of national interest.
‘Even those of us who were against Perreira's reappointment in late October last year must admit that he deserves credit for his hands on approach towards our national team,' the ID Member of Parliament says.
‘Fifa should seriously look at reviewing the timetable for host country teams in the future so that they can have extra time to build team spirit and camaraderie.
‘Players like Kermit Erasmus, Anele Ngconga and Masilo Modubi, some of whom may very well form part of the Bafana Bafana 2010 World Cup squad, should not be denied this training opportunity,' says Mcgluwa.
‘It is also very important that Parreira secure the release of hot UK-based SA players such as Benni McCarthy, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Steven Pienaar and Aaron Mokoena.
