Joe Mcgluwa, the ID Spokesperson for Sport, has accused the Department ‘of failing to deliver on its mandate to develop and transform sport in our country.'

The ID MP's comments come after the presentation of the Department of Sports and Recreation's Strategic Plan 2010 to 2014.

‘For 2 years in a row the Department has received a qualified audit and the ID is hoping that 2010 will be different. For many of our young people sport is often the only hope they have in a society saturated in crime, drugs and neglect,' Mr Mcgluwa says.

‘Obviously, despite this harsh reality, the Department has not seen it fit to run its financial affairs properly.

‘What is happening to the money that provincial departments and organizations on the ground are getting to further development in sports? For instance, what has happened to the millions that were given to the municipalities as part of the Municipality Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funding?

‘So far I haven't seen anything concrete in terms of sports infrastructure by the municipalities that have received these grants. In fact, even the Department has said they don't know where that money went,' Mcgluwa says.

‘And it is our poorest areas that are the worst affected. These are the areas where our youngsters are forced to practice football on sand and rocks, or next to busy highways.'

Mcgluwa has also called upon the Portfolio Committee to ‘continue with its robust oversight responsibility.'
