Brett Herron, ID Councillor and Spokesperson for the ID Caucus in the City of Cape Town, says the ID would support a City bid for the 2020 Olympic Games and would propose that the City starts to investigate launching a formal bid.

According to news reports this morning, International Olympics Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge expressed support for a South African bid for the 2020 games and indicated that the Cape Town bid for the 2004 games was "credible".

‘The City of Cape Town made a very serious bid for the 2004 Olympic Games and did relatively well to come third in that process - losing to Athens and Rome. Since then our City has really reached iconic international status as a tourist and events destination,' Mr Herron says.

‘We are busy helping stage a superb Soccer World Cup and the time is perfect for us to consider a bid for the Olympic Games.

‘Clearly the economic impact and benefits of making the bid and then hosting the Games must be thoroughly investigated before a commitment can be made; but we believe it would be in the City's best interests to start that process and we will certainly raise this with our coalition partners and in Portfolio Committees,' says Herron.
