Joe Mcgluwa, the ID Spokesperson for Sport, says Athletics South Africa (ASA) boss Leonard Chuene ‘has treated Caster Semenya in a chauvinistic manner and objectified her in front of the whole sporting world.

‘The Independent Democrats smelt a rat from the very beginning, when contradictory statements were coming from inside the ASA,' Mr Mcgluwa says.

‘Since Chuene has apologised now that the truth has come out through the media anyway, but he still won't resign, he should be fired.

‘Here is someone whose lies made our whole country angry. His lies made us accuse others of racism and chauvinism, when the fact was that Chuene was lying for the sole purpose of bolstering his own image and the short-term image of his organisation,' says Mcgluwa.

‘Chuene quite simply didn't give a damn about Caster Semenya or her family.

‘Caster's pride and dignity have been violated by one of our own. This is the lowest form of chauvinism and unpatriotic behaviour and Chuene should be punished for this and for embarrassing us on an international sporting level,' says Mcgluwa.

The ID Member of Parliament says he was ‘extremely disappointed' by the response of Butana Komphela, the chairman of parliament's sports portfolio committee, ‘who was happy to rally around Chuene with the rest of us when it appeared he was standing up for Caster, but now that it has become clear that Chuene has lied, talks about not wanting "to chase the rumour."

‘To speak of rumour when Chuene admitted that he lied represents a sudden abdication of responsibility when it matters most. Not too long ago some in the ANC were talking about laying down their lives for Caster Semenya,' Mcgluwa says.

‘The Independent Democrats will make our feelings on this matter known when the committee meets and we will remind its members and chairman that MPs should put Caster before their fat cat friends.'
