Addressing hundreds of community members in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg last night, Mokonyane said the recent events in the area, instigated by "corrupt" elements, which led to chaos and rioting, could not be tolerated.
"We are going to deal with corruption from all sectors, including developers, those who fraudulently collect money from communities, community members who sell their low-cost houses and anything that disrupts progress in housing," she said.
Diepsloot erupted into mayhem last week following unfounded rumours that residents would be relocated to Brits, north-west of Pretoria.
However, it later emerged that the rumour was spread by "unscrupulous" elements, misleading the community.
Government had only intended to evict people who had illegally occupied low-cost houses that did not belong to them leading to a discrepancy in the waiting list.
Mokonyane called on community members to be wary of rogue elements who had other interests unrelated to the development of Diepsloot.
"We must be careful of those who are bent on dividing us because they want us to accompany them on their way to committing their illicit acts," she warned.
At the meeting, those allegedly responsible for having spread the rumours were brought to the fore to apologise to the community.
They included some members of the local leadership of the African National Congress (ANC), the South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco), the ANC Youth League and the ANC Women's League.
In an Imbizo type of set up, the community raised their concerns to the MEC and demanded almost in unison, that the local leadership of the organisations be dissolved to make way for fresh blood.
Mokonyane indicated to the community that there was development already in the Diepsloot area.
Services had been installed and 4 659 houses completed in Diepsloot West Extensions 1 to 7 and 9.
In the township's phase five area, the installation of essential services such as water and sewage for 742 stands had been approved.
In the latter, services had been completed and beneficiaries settled. –BuaNews.
