As South Africa prepares itself for the third democratic elections, the Department of Home Affairs today called upon people who applied for their identity document’ (IDs) at least two months ago to collect them urgently.

The Independent Electoral Commission also announced that the next voter registration period would take place on January 24 and 25, 2004.

The department stated that since the start of the ID campaign last year to date, it has dispatched around 2,6-million IDs to South African citizens.

The department has reportedly dispatched 100 000 more IDs than envisioned, however, the department said it is concerned about the number of people who have applied for the bar-coded IDs and have not collected them.

In the interim, it is estimated that there are more than 150 000 uncollected IDs in the offices across the country.
