Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Brigalia Bam will address a variety of civil society stakeholders including unions, business, community based organisations, non-government organisations, parastatals, women's groups, youth groups and representatives of the tertiary education sector.
Plans leading up to the local elections, including the planned voter registration on September 3, are expected to be discussed as well as the mobilisation of eligible voters to promote effective participation in the election and the deepening of democracy.
The meeting will kickstart the provincial government's programme to popularise the local government elections, including calling on people to get their ID books if they do not have them, register to vote in the elections, and check that their names are on the voters' roll.
South Africa's second democratic local government elections are expected to take place later this year or early next year.
