Government has widened its investigative net to include suspects with military background and expertise, in its bid to crackdown on suspects responsible for the nine bomb blasts that rocked Soweto, outside Johannesburg, around midnight last night.

A tenth blast was reported at Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria today.

In one of the blasts, a mosque in Dlamini was damaged while another bomb cut railway lines between Soweto and Johannesburg, according to police.

The move to also look at suspects with military background follows preliminary investigations pointing to, among others, signs that certain military execution acts, which were carried out during the blasts, could point to people with a thorough knowledge on explosives.

Speaking to reporters at the Johannesburg International Airport today, Safety and Security minister Charles Nqakula, accompanied by other ministers in the safety and security cluster said investigators were looking at all possibilities, "including people with a military background".

He has however, confirmed that government had information that "two white males were seen running away from one of the scenes".

No one has been arrested so far in connection with the bomb blasts. Intelligence minister Lindiwe Sisulu however said government would unleash the full might of the law to bring the perpetrators to book.

"It is clear that the bombing is an attempt to provoke reactants such as violence and instability in the country," she added.

"The fact that a railway line, taxi rank and mosque were attacked, shows that, that was certainly the intentions of the perpetrators".

She said government however was on top of the situation.

The minister had earlier visited the husband of the deceased at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, but was unable to talk to him, as he was undergoing surgery - BuaNews.
