In a statement today, the Foreign Affairs Department described the move as regrettable as the coup occurred a month before the holding of the country's second democratic elections since the devastating civil war in 1998-1999.
Guinea-Bissau military has accused its government of incompetence thus staged the coup.
The army's chief-of-staff, General Verissimo Seabra Correia, seized control of the small republic and detained the President, Kumba Yala and Prime Minister Mario Pires.
In the statement released by the department, foreign affairs deputy minister Aziz Pahad reiterated that Africa's leaders would not tolerate any unconstitutional transfer of power.
“It the unconstitutional transfer of power undermines the very spirit of African reconstruction through Nepad and the African Union,” he said.
The deputy minister urged the military to restore the duly elected leaders of Guinea-Bissau.
Pahad reminded the military that a democratic system was the only acceptable way to change a government.
“Those involved in the coup are urged to exercise wisdom and discretion and act in the long-term best interest of their country and fellow-citizens,” said the statement – BuaNews.
