Government has called for public comment on a proposed amendment to South Africa’s broad-based black economic-empowerment (BBBEE) codes of good practice, allowing registered auditors to conduct BBBEE verifications and issue verification certificates as from April 1, 2011.

Hitherto, only verification agencies accredited by the South African National Accreditation System have been empowered to issue BBBEE level certificates.

The industry was notified of the proposed change through a notice issued by Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies and published in the Government Gazette on December 31, 2010.

Interested parties have until February 28, 2011, or 60 days subsequent to the gazette publication, to make “inputs, comments and objections”.

The Department of Trade and Industry said that commentary could be submitted by post, or email. Postal submissions should be directed to The BEE Unit, Private Bag X84, Pretoria, 0001, while the email address was given as bee-verification@thedti.gov.za.
