Former security policeman Gideon Niewoudt has taken the witness stand in his amnesty application hearing which resumed in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday, SABC radio news reported.

This follows a lengthy discussion about whether he should be testifying. His legal team had argued that his mental state was not stable enough.

However, counsel for the state, Kessie Naidoo, argued that he should testify, before a psychiatrist was given the chance to testify about Niewoudt's mental condition.

Psychiatrist Dr Peter Crawford was asked to leave.

The hearing was adjourned in April this year to allow Niewoudt time to seek medical treatment.

Niewoudt is seeking amnesty for the murder of the activists known as the Pebco Three. – Sapa.
