Germany's technical cooperation agency GTZ warned Friday that the gap between rich and poor nations is widening and that Third World nations' situation has not improved since the first world environment summit in Rio in 1992.

"The imbalance between these countries and the industrial nations has grown even further," a spokesman at GTZ, located in Eschborn outside of Frankfurt, said.

The Rio conference ended with a pledge by 178 countries to work to bring the fundamental human needs into harmony with a quality environment and healthy economy for all people.

The GTZ (technical cooperation company) pursues development projects in more than 130 countries - Sapa/DPA.
