The former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Dr Biki Minyuku, has been appointed as Business Against Crime South Africa's (BAC-SA) project director for the Criminal Justice Strengthening Programme (CJSP).

The former principal and vice chancellor of the University of the North, Dr Minyuku will head up a BAC-SA's team that will assist the Department of Justice with the implementation of the CJSP.

The objective of the CJSP, a tripartite alliance between the justice department, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and BAC-SA, is to build capacity throughout the South African court system.

Dr Minyuku said the programme would assist the justice department to effectively manage the country's courts and to reduce the case backlog.

'I see my new job at BAC-SA as daunting and challenging as my TRC position'.

The CJSP initiative is aimed at some of the most important operational areas within the justice department, such as the Court Services Business Unit, the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs department of the National Prosecuting Authority (SOCA), Office of the Chief Financial Officer, the Directorate of Court Services and the Justice College.

Issues to be addressed include streamlining the process of dealing with sexual offenders and perpetrators of family violence.

'We want to ensure that all cases are dealt with speedily and effectively,' he said.

One of the programmes, he said, would rationalise and streamline court management and administration.

'To ease pressure off magistrates and prosecutors, new professional court managers will be appointed to take over the administration of courts,' Dr Minyuku said. - BuaNews.
