Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi's appeal hearing against a high court corruption conviction starts in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Selebi was sentenced to a 15-year jail term for corruption after accepting payments from convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti.

He remains free pending the appeal.

Delivering judgment in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, Judge Meyer Joffe said society in general and the courts in particular relied on the honesty, integrity and truthfulness of policemen and women.

The high court held that mostly this reliance was not misplaced but in Selebi's case it was.

The SCA has set aside two days for the appeal hearing.

Selebi was granted leave to appeal in terms of whether the State had proved that he had provided Agliotti with anything in return as a result of gratification received from the convicted drug trafficker.

The appeal would be before a full bench of five judges. It was not clear whether Selebi would attend the Bloemfontein hearing.
