More than 600 government and business delegates from 40 countries are meeting in Durban to help move the New Partnership for Africa's Development from words into action.
Last year, business gave Nepad a ringing endorsement but this year the emphasis was clearly on implementation.
South African president Thabo Mbeki, Mocambican president Joaquim Chissano and Marc Ravalomanana of Madagascar will share the podium for the final session of the three-day meeting.
Speaking yesterday, Mbeki said Africa had made significant progress in setting up the legal institutions to transform the continent.
But governments desperately needed funding to put them into place.
These included the African Court of Justice, the proposed Peace and Security Council, and the New Partnership for Africa's Development peer review mechanism.
Most African countries would struggle to find the resources to pay their share of the associated costs, he said.
Some delegates urged corporates, and especially African companies, to put their money where their mouths were and to fund the peer review mechanism in partnership with governments. – Sapa.
