Cleaners are putting final touches to the red carpet leading to the National Assembly house where President Thabo Mbeki is expected to deliver his State of the Nation address on Friday morning.

Apart from a handful of MPs who had begun to trickle in before 9am, most of the dignitaries had not yet arrived.

High profile people expected to attend include ANC president Jacob Zuma and Anglican archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane.

Former president Nelson Mandela, as well as former deputy president FW de Klerk are not expected to attend. Both offered apologies.

Mbeki is expected to deliver his speech at around 11am Friday morning.
