Speaking to the media after meeting with the Fifa technical team at the Union Buildings in Pretoria this morning, President Mbeki said there was general commitment from all sectors of the society to host the tourney.
"We want to ensure the inspection team that when the executive committee decides that we host the world cup, we will meet the standards that they have set," he said.
He added that government was fully committed to ensuring that the Bid Committee received all the necessary support they needed to fulfil their enormous task.
President Mbeki urged South Africans countrywide to welcome the inspection team in a manner that would demonstrate a sense of enthusiasm for soccer.
Furthermore, he reiterated the fact that South Africa's bid did not seek to benefit the country alone.
Inspection team head Jan Peeters commended the Committee on " the excellent organisation" and said this morning's meeting with President Mbeki, Deputy President Jacob Zuma, and Ministers of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Ngconde Balfour of foreign affairs and sport respectively, as well as minister Essop Pahad of the Presidency, proved government's support of the bid.
Bid chairperson Irvin Khoza said yesterday's inspection at the Securicor Loftus stadium went well.
He however noted that there were some improvements that ought to be done such as the extension of the media room. Further inspections today are being done in Polokwane and thereafter in Johannesburg. – BuaNews.
