"Robberies at residential properties are extremely disconcerting and have increased with 27,3% (18438) according to the latest crime statistics. If it is taken into account that robberies at residential properties in 2007/2008 increased by 13,5% (14 481) and in 2006/2007 by 26,4%, robberies at residential property have in the past three years increased by 54,2%. Robberies with aggravating circumstances have increased by 2,6% (121 392). This type of crime is threatening the lives of the public and they are not safe in their own homes. Car jackings have in the past thee years also increased every year and in the last year it increased by 5%. Over a period of three years, car jackings have increased by 16,3%, That means that people feel unsafe to drive in their cars. These three crimes threaten the lives of the public and they are unsafe in their own homes and on their way to work. This confirms the public's view that crime is increasing," Mr. Pieter Groenewald (MP), the chief spokesperson for the FF Plus on the Police, says.

"The latest crime statistics (raw figures) which indicate that murder (-1,8), attempted murder (-2,6) and ordinary robberies (-8,9%) decreased, could create a false peace about crime in South Africa. The murder figure is now 37,3 per 100 000 of the population, but the world average for murder is 5 per 100 000 of the population. In South Africa, 50 people are still being murdered every day and murder is still nearly eight times higher than the world average. The rape figures (24 836) indicate that 68 women are raped every day or three every hour. That makes South Africa still unsafe for women," Groenewald said.

"The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the decrease in other crimes and that the Minister has undertaken to release crime figures at least every year. The Freedom Front Plus would however prefer that the figures are released every quarter," Groenewald added.
