"The Minister of Police, Mr. Nathi Mthethwa, said at Muldersdrift at a conference of the Institute of Security Studies, that he would expect researchers would have played a bigger role in the research into the causes for the violent nature of crime in South Africa. Mthethwa is however in possession of a report drafted by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation into the reasons for the cruelty of violent crime, but he does not reveal it. Mthethwa acknowledged that the report has been completed but has been under consideration by the Cabinet Committee on Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) since June of 2009. (Parliamentary Question attached). It is welcomed that more research into the causes of the violent nature of crime in the country is being done, but Mthethwa should sweep in front of his own door," Mr. Pieter Groenewald (MP), chief spokesperson on Police for the Freedom Front Plus says.

"This investigation has been overdue as the previous Minister of Police, Charles Nqakula, had already in September 2007 given instructions for the investigation/research. The cruelty accompanying some crimes is extremely worrisome and the reasons for it are extremely important in order to act pre-emptively. The completed report should be released in its entirety to the public and should not be edited by the Cabinet Committee. The Minister should also explain what the reasons are for the delay in releasing the report," Groenewald said.
