"The explanation of the Minister of Public Enterprises, Ms. Barbara Hogan and Mr. Bobby Godsell, Chairperson of Eskom, that the salary increase of 26,7% of Mr. Jacob Maroga, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eskom, is not a salary increase but a promotion adjustment of only 9%, is misleading. The truth is that Maroga's salary is now 26,7% more than it was in the previous year. This is in effect a salary increase of 26,7%", Mr. Pieter Groenewald (MO), chief spokesperson on Public Enterprises for the Freedom Front Plus says.
The Freedom Front Plus gladly participates in any argument that R5 million is too much or too little for the Chief Executive Officer of Eskom, as proposed by Godsell. If the argument is that R5 million is justifiable for the position of CEO, then the fact still remains that Maroga is not suitable for the position. By doing nothing when he was timeously forewarned about the impending coal crisis, proved that that he is not suitable for the position of CEO, regardless of the salary. The crisis cost South Africa approximately R50 billion. Any CEO whose management had this as a result, would have been dismissed immediately and declared to be incompetent for the position. That is why the Freedom Front Plus is asking the Minister of Public Enterprises to intervene and remove Maroga from his position. The consumer is already being taxed heavily and it is unreasonable to expect consumers to continue to finance incompetence and inefficiency," Groenewald said.
