"The resignation of Mr. Bobby Godsell, Chairperson of the Eskom Board, is a wrong decision which is to the detriment of Eskom and the South African electricity consumers. Mr. Godsell's record shows that he has the necessary skills and abilities to ensure that Eskom gets out of the current crisis the company finds itself in. His resignation will ensure that South Africa will in the long term be paying a high price for this mistake. It will also definitely lead to investor confidence in South Africa reaching rock-bottom as the message which is being sent out to investors is that Eskom is being managed according to political and not business principles. This decision will have bigger job losses as a result and it is a very high price to pay for Jacob Maroga, Julius Malema and the Black Management Forum's political interference," Mr. Pieter Groenewald (MP), the Parliamentary spokesperson on Public Enterprises for the Freedom Front Plus says.

"In contrast to Mr. Godsell's reputation, Mr. Jacob Maroga, the Chief Executive Officer of Eskom, has thoroughly shown that he can not manage Eskom. He was responsible for a loss of nearly R50 billion as a result of the coal crisis which he had been warned about in advance and did nothing to prevent it. The consumers are now being forced to pay the price for the hopeless management abilities of Maroga," Mr. Groenewald said.

‘If it is true that Mr. Godsell's resignation was tendered after a meeting with President Zuma last night, the conclusion can be drawn that there was political pressure on Mr. Godsell to resign. In holding such a meeting, the President would show that he has no faith in his Cabinet Minister, Ms. Barbara Hogan's capabilities to deal with the crisis at Eskom. If the meeting with President Zuma led to the resignation of Godsell it is clear that President Zuma has caved to the pressure of the BMF, the ANC Youth League and the National Union of Metal Workers of SA (NUMSA)," Mr. Groenewald added.
