The Freedom Front Plus wants to congratulate the South African Police Service with their campaign which they launched during the holiday period in especially December 2010.

Their approach to reign in reckless and negligent drivers, have borne fruit in ensuring that holidaymakers and motorists are safer on our roads.

Appreciation is expressed for the sacrifices of these members in the festive season.

It was noted with great concern that the honourable member Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was involved in an incident during this period. The fact that her driver allegedly drove recklessly and negligently by swerving through traffic at 150 km/h is regrettable.

The further alleged action by the honourable member does not redound to the honour of Parliament and of colleagues and is an embarrassment. A Parliamentary Member should at all times set an example for voters.

The alleged action of the honourable member would attest of arrogance and a sense of superiority that she is above the law. Other motorists in similar positions were summarily arrested for obstruction of justice.

The further consequences of the incident that members of the Police were thereafter suspended and even asked to offer apologies to the honourable member Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, undermines the authority of the Police and promotes crime.

The Freedom Front Plus has already asked the minister of Police for an investigation into the matter. The minister was also requested that the full report is made public as it is in the public’s interest to know what the true facts of the incident are. If this is not done it will affect the confidence in the Police and the Police’s morale.
