The Freedom Front Plus said that the party will fight the latest attempt by the Tshwane metro council to unilaterally change the name of Pretoria to Tshwane, with everything in its power.
This follows after a court application was delivered against the Freedom Front Plus, AfriForum and Dr. Conrad Beyers whereby the Tshwane metro attempts to obtain permission to erect sign posts reflecting the name "City of Tshwane" at various gateways in and around Pretoria. According to the documents the matter will be heard by the North Gauteng High Court on the 6th of October 2009.
At the end of 2007, the FF Plus, AfriForum and Beyers obtained an interdict against the metro council, prohibiting the council to erect name signs incorrectly referring to Pretoria as Tshwane. The metro council brought a new application in an attempt to avoid the interdict.
According to Dr. Conrad Beyers, FF Plus councillor in the metro, this is further proof that the local ANC has no intention to act in a spirit of reconciliation. This is the ANC's oldest trick: In order to divert attention away from the financial disaster they created for the Capital, they start changing names.
"The local ANC's hostile attitude toward Afrikaner's heritage is in direct contrast with Pres. Zuma's reconciliatory gestures towards Afrikaners. The FF Plus said at various occasions that the party is open to a compromise in the name issue, but is clear that the local ANC chooses the route of confrontation", Beyers said.
According to Beyers, the FF Plus realises the importance of making preparations for the 2010 Fifa world cup, and that name signage must be erected. "The FF Plus also wants that name boards should be placed at the city's entrances. But the name on those boards should be Pretoria".
