The Freedom Front Plus welcomed the temporary suspension of the City Manager of the Tshwane metro council, but said that the financial problems facing the city reach much deeper than only the City Manager.
The FF Plus also welcomed the fact that the Council forced the Mayor to launch an independent investigation into numerous allegations of mismanagement and irregularities. It was recently revealed in council reports that massive amounts of taxpayers' money were wasted during the 2008/2009 financial year.
According to Dr. Conrad Beyers, FF Plus councillor, the financial woes of the City are not only the fault of the City Manager. There is a culture in the ANC of total disregard for public funds.
During the 2008/2009 financial year there were approximately R150 million spend on goods and services where the normal tender procedures were not followed. This leaves the door wide open for abuse and nepotism.
The FF Plus proposed during Thursday, 20 October's Council Meeting that these expenses should also be investigated so that better oversight and control could be exercised by Council. All opposition parties supported the FF Plus, but the ANC opposed it.
"We must get to the core of the City's financial problems, but the ANC blocks it. What do they have to hide?"
