The Freedom Front Plus has welcomed comments made by the local ANC branch of Pretoria in which they acknowledge that the name of the capital is Pretoria.
The chairperson of the ANC's Tshwane district, Sputla Ramakgopa, indicated that Pretoria's name can not be changed that easily.
According to Dr. Conrad Beyers, FF Plus councillor, this is a victory for Pretoria residents and a wake up call to increase pressure to protect the name of the city.
"The local ANC is under pressure due to the city's financial crisis and their own supporters are making it clear to them that they want service delivery and not name changes. The local ANC is clearly divided about the name issue," Beyers said.
The FF Plus earlier accused the ANC controlled Metro Council of trying to deflecting attention away from the financial crisis in which they have landed the city, after the Metro Council had taken the FF Plus to court to obtain permission to erect name boards which only bears the name "Tshwane" on them.
The FF Plus said that it wants to hold talks with the local leadership of the ANC about a possible final solution for the name issue. "We believe that a permanent solution is possible with which the local residents of the city would be satisfied. Pretoria has the opportunity to set an example as to how sensitive issues such as this should be dealt with," Beyers added.
