The Freedom Front Plus has committed itself to co-operation with other opposition political parties after next year's national and provincial elections.

"The Freedom Front Plus supports responsible co-operation with other political parties in possible coalitions following the elections in 2009," FF Plus leader Pieter Mulder said in a statement on Monday.

The announcement follows a meeting of the party's federal council at the weekend.

"The FF Plus leadership is requested to continue with talks which had been taking place behind the scenes in recent times with other political parties," Mulder said.

The party believed the co-operation model that would draw the most votes "is the model in which every political party participates in the election under its own name in order to obtain the maximum number of votes from its own niche market".

Before the election, an assurance should be given to the voters that these parties would co-operate after the election in places where a coalition would be able to form a government.

"Such an agreement also means that these parties during the election will direct their attacks on the governing party and not on each other," he said.
