"The ANC Youth leaders are recklessly irresponsible with their provocative comments about the nationalisation of land and mines. South Africa received only the ninth largest number of foreign investments in Africa. This is very worrying and places serious pressure on the economic growth rate in South Africa. It has to be accepted that these type of political comments played an important role in the reduction in the number of investments," Dr. Pieter Mulder, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said during a citrus farmers day in Polokwane (Pietersburg).
Dr. Mulder and Ms. Pinky Kekana, MEC for Transport in Limpopo, acted as speakers during this farmers' day.
Angola received the most foreign investments in Africa amounting to $10 billion as opposed to South Africa's mere $1,6 billion. In the past, South Africa was the country which received the most foreign investments.
Dr. Mulder also referred to the Wallmart-Massmart court case during his speech and argued that it sends a wrong message to prospective investors in South Africa. "Court cases will only result in foreign investors channelling their money to other more attractive investment countries. There are other methods, such as charging tariffs, to protect South African producers and farmers from unfair foreign competition," according to Dr. Mulder.
