The 31,4% electricity tariff increase which was approved earlier today by Nersa, is bad news for South African consumers who are at present carrying the burden of the world-wide economic crash. The tariff increase will push inflation higher and restrict economic growth. The tariff increase underlines once again the necessity of the deregulation of the provisioning of power in order for the monopoly which is at present held by Eskom can be broken with innovative energy alternatives.
